From poverty to mastery : The incredible rise of a Chinese chef

This renowned chef, specializing in Sichuan cuisine, is a perfect example of a meteoric rise from humble beginnings. Born in 1989 in the rural Fushun County of Zigong (Sichuan), he dedicated himself to cooking from the age of 12 to support himself.

Wang Gang’s journey is that of a self-taught chef who learned Sichuan cuisine, then Cantonese cuisine as an apprentice in Guangdong, honing his knife and wok skills in the shadow of restaurants.

Despite humble beginnings and grueling hours, he rose to fame in 2017 by launching his own online cooking videos.

He stands out for his simple, direct, and technical approach: his clear and concise videos on authentic Sichuan dishes have earned him phenomenal success.

Without excessive staging or embellishment, he reveals the essence of Chinese cuisine, from the preparation of ingredients to the mastery of fire.

By 2018, he had already amassed 5 million subscribers across various platforms (Weibo, YouTube, Bilibili), transforming him into a true icon.

Today, Wang Gang is not only a chef respected for his impeccable technique, but a major culinary influencer in China and beyond, proving that a career can be built solely on the basis of hard work, talent, and a passion for culinary authenticity.
