These celebrities who lost all their money on stupidity and bad behavior

The fate of many celebrities, even after a period of fame and fortune, can take a turn for the worse for various reasons, ranging from addictions and management errors to being forgotten by the industry.

Here are five notable examples of celebrities who ended their lives in conditions of misery or extreme poverty:

Billie Holiday, Jazz Singer

Despite her immense musical success, she struggled throughout her life with alcohol and drug addictions.

A 1947 drug conviction revoked her work permit, preventing her from performing in establishments that sold alcohol and drastically reducing her income.

She died at 44 with only 70 cents in her bank account.

Bela Lugosi, actor (famous for his role as Dracula)

After achieving fame playing Count Dracula in 1931, roles became scarcer and less lucrative.

He struggled with an addiction to painkillers.

He lived in poverty until his death in 1656, his funeral expenses and tombstone having been paid for by his relatives and his wife at the time.

Rembrandt van Rijn, painter (Dutch Golden Age)

Even though he was famous and prosperous during his lifetime, Rembrandt was notoriously poor at managing his finances.

After the death of his wife and a creative/personal crisis, he accumulated debts.

In 1656, he was forced to declare bankruptcy, and all his possessions, including his vast art collection, were sold at auction.

He died completely penniless in 1669.

Judy Garland, actress and singer (The Wizard of Oz)

Propelled to stardom at a very young age, her life was marked by the pressures of Hollywood, drug abuse (amphetamines and barbiturates), and psychological problems.

Despite her high income, she was the victim of mismanagement (by agents and managers) and accumulated significant debts, particularly tax debts, leaving her in dire financial straits before her untimely death in 1969.

Corey Haim, Teen Idol (1980s/Early 1990s)

After being a teen star (notably in The Lost Boys in 1987), his career declined in the mid-1990s due to his struggle with substance abuse (drugs and prescription medication).

He filed for bankruptcy in 1997, listing substantial debts, including tax debts.

He died in poverty in 2010, and his family had to ask fans for help to cover his funeral expenses.

Gary Coleman, child star (Diff’rent Strokes)

Fame and very well paid in the 70s and 80s, he discovered as an adult that his fortune had been squandered by his parents and advisors.

He pursued legal action to recover his money, which left him in debt and financially unstable throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

He struggled to find work and died in 2010 after an accident, having frequently teetered on the brink of bankruptcy.

Chris Farley, comedian (Saturday Night Live, comedy films)

A rising comedy star in the early to mid-1990s, he earned millions.

However, his lifestyle was marked by serious addictions to food, alcohol, and drugs.

The expenses related to his treatments, rehabilitation and his frenetic lifestyle, combined with a premature death in 1997 (at the age of 33), left his estate in an unstable financial situation with debts.
