Ashikaga Flower Park, located about two hours north of Tokyo via the Tobu Railway line, will hold its « Grand Wisteria Festival » or Ofuji Matsuri from Saturday, April 11 to Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The event, now in its 29th year, showcases 350 wisteria vines, including pink, white, and yellow varieties, as well as enormous purple trellises.
The highlight of the festival is the blooming of the park’s enormous 160-year-old purple wisteria. Spanning 1,000 square meters, its trellis is the true symbol of the park. There is also an 80-meter-long tunnel of white wisteria, designated a prefectural natural monument.
The wisteria blooms in a specific color sequence: first pink, then purple, white, and finally yellow.
Unlike the ephemeral cherry blossoms of Japan, whose full bloom lasts only four or five days, the wisteria display can be admired for a little over a month.
During the festival period, the wisteria is illuminated at nightfall, allowing visitors to discover its beauty in an even more spectacular light.
The Ashikaga Flower Park covers nearly 10 hectares. It is one of Japan’s top attractions, welcoming more than 1.5 million visitors each year.
In 2014, it was listed by CNN as one of the world’s « Dream Destinations, » and today it attracts a very large number of international visitors.
