Six black South African rhinos left their reserves a few days ago for a long journey to Chad. After a flight of nearly 5,000 kilometres north, they were released into Zakouma National Park, in the savannah of south-eastern Chad, where they are to be the start of a new outbreak of black rhinos.
Chad and South Africa signed a cooperation agreement in 2010 to protect biodiversity and ensure the long-term survival of threatened animal species in Zakouma.
After seven years of efforts, this agreement has reduced poaching to almost nothing, thus allowing the reintroduction of rhinos into the country.
The last specimen of this species was observed in 1972.
