Amsterdam is getting ready to regulate tourism in its famous Red Quarter, in order to contain the ever increasing flow of visitors in this sector of the city.
The Netherlands metropolis plans to close some streets to clean up if the tourist pressure becomes too strong. Municipal staff can serve as « hosts » who will direct tourists to less frequented streets and prevent incivilities.
Amsterdam welcomes some 18 million tourists every year, more than 20 times its population. Most visitors are concentrated in the alleys and along the canals of the city centre, where the Red Quarter and its windows are located.
