Since June 1, 2019, all plastic packaging will be strictly prohibited. This is in response to a Tanzanian government directive.
Tanzanian government guidelines now prohibit the import, export, production, sale, storage, supply and use of plastic bags throughout the country. One point to be made clear: « the government has no intention of making things unpleasant for tourists. It is simply a matter of emphasizing the need to protect the environment and keep our country clean and attractive; the visitors we welcome will have to accept the minor constraints that result. »
The prohibition applies to all types of plastic bags, regardless of their thickness.
However, plastic or plastic packaging for medical services, industrial products, construction industry, agriculture, food products, hygiene and waste management will not be banned.
Travellers are advised to avoid carrying or packing plastic bags in their suitcase or hand luggage before travelling to the destination.
A special office will be dedicated for all entry points for control.
Only plastic transport bags of the Ziploc type – particularly used to transport toiletries – will be tolerated, provided they are not left on site.
To date, 34 African countries have legislated to control the use of plastic bags through bans or taxes.
This ban came into effect on June 1 throughout Tanzania and tourists who violate this rule will be subject to fines.
