Philadelphia is a major historical, cultural, and artistic center in the United States and a major industrial port on the Delaware River that flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Its name, which means « fraternal friendship », is that of the ancient city of Lydia, founded by Attalus II philadelphus, brother of Eumen II, king of Pergamos, where one of the seven Christian congregations mentioned in Revelation is established.
Philadelphia is the cradle of many American actors: Grace Kelly (1929-1982), Bill Cosby (1937-), Richard Gere (1949-), Kevin Bacon (1958-), Will Smith (1968-), Ryan Phillippe (1974-), Bradley Cooper (1975-) are the most famous.
Between the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers
Philadelphia offers a wide range of activities to enjoy the outdoors and especially the privileged location of the city, nestled between the Delaware and Schuylkill, the two emblematic rivers of the city.
Visitors can enjoy the bucolic Boat House Row neighbourhood or the many waterfront amenities, such as Penn’s Landing or the Schuylkill River Trail, that make Philadelphia a vibrant city with a mix of historic and hip.
Boat House Row, a jump in time
Located between Kelly Drive and the Schuylkill River, Boat House Row is a neighbourhood apart. Classified Historic Landmark since 1987, it consists of a row of houseboats belonging to various rowing clubs. This string of small buildings with traditional and colourful architecture offers a bucolic walk by boat, bicycle or on foot along the river.
Fairmount Park, a case of greenery
This wooded park is the largest in the United States located in town. It extends over almost one hectare and offers many activities, including a concert stage, the oldest zoo in the country, a Japanese garden, several monuments, as well as architectural remains abandoned to nature for several years. The famous Philadelphia Museum of the Arts is the gateway and the Schuylkill River accompanies visitors to the heart of this green setting.
Schuylkill River trail – Floating walks
This walk does not start at the water’s edge, but in the middle of the Schuylkill River. This nearly 100km long trail, punctuated in places by floating platforms, offers some of the most extraordinary views of Philadelphia’s skyline, as well as along several neighborhoods of the city of brotherly love by the waters, before following the meandering river to Valley Forge National Historic Park.
Penn’s landing, an urban oasis
Located on the banks of the Delaware River, Penn’s Landing offers an endless array of ways to enjoy the riverfront. This urban oasis hosts all the events that make Philly a vibrant and vibrant city.
From the huge skating rink in winter to the famous Roots picnic in summer, via the Beer Gardens and the Spruce Street Harbor Park food-trucks, these redeveloped shorelines form the heart of the city.
A little further north on the waterfront, the sunny lawns of Race Street Pier probably offer one of the best views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and free morning yoga classes from April to November complete the range of outdoor and waterfront activities on offer.
Moshulu – History of the seas
The Moshulu is a four-masted ship built in 1904 and now moored on the banks of the Delaware River. Used for Rocky, Le Parrain 2 and Blow Out films, the sailboat is now one of the best tables in the city. The superb setting and history of this giant of the seas create a very special atmosphere, to which are added the pleasures of the immense terrace located on the bridge and offering a breathtaking view over Philadelphia and its banks.
